I see what you mean about the orcs leg length. Might also be nice to see the pelvis angled 'up' a little more, the spine a little more bent, knees bent and shoulders higher or head lower to accentuate that stooped gorilla pose you mentioned.

No smudge tool was harmed in the making of this image.

I adjusted the orc a bit - didn't want him too gorilla like, but I changed the legs, the collarbones and the pelvis. Also did outlines and realised the thighbones gave the elf way too wide hips, so changed them too... I think I need to practice muscles and their placement/masses, but that's for another day :P This was fun anyhow!

And then I've been noodling away at Aries for most of today... I think I've repainted almost every little bit, or at least it feels that way. Yet it looks pretty much the same. Slow going... I still want to add some "dirt" (cracks and such) to floor and walls, but I'm procrastinating due to ArtRage's lag... And I think I'll do what was suggested with the Giger piece as well: add a gradient or two, to darken some bits compared to others... And I've been trying to add scars on Ares/Aries himself but they either become way too much or don't show at all at this size (which is approximately print size).

EDIT: and I forgot to mention that due to the perspective getting screwed over every time I try to adjust a new floor, the hangings on the wall are now in the wrong place (should be symmetrical behind the chair). I'm not sure yet whether I'll move the two slim ones or paint them together into one big one. If the latter, it'll really need some kind of design on it but I'm not sure what. Originally I had the aries sign (and name) but I didn't like it...

This is looking great. The pose is really cool -- very casual and menacing at the same time.
But I find the pillars in the background very distracting, and I think it has to do with the perspective and the crop. The perspective on the back part of the floor and the pillars should be a flatter plane, which would match the chair perspective better. Right now it feels a bit like the floor is rising up in the background.
I'd also consider cropping in a bit more on the left, or doing something to break up those pillars -- my eye constantly wants to pass through them like a gate, but there's nothing there to pull me back into the picture, so my eyes wander off the top.
But overall it's looking great.

Thanks Smolin :)

In my head, before I started painting, those pillars were merely hinted at in a rather dark background, so that's part of why I want to darken som areas. Not sure it'll help though since the pillars will still be lit up by the fire... Regarding the floor, this is why I hate perspective... I never get it to look right. I did align floor and chair when it comes to the lines running towards the left corner of the floor. And I felt the floor was tilting upwards as well, so I chose to flatten it a bit already, deviating from perspective... And like I said, the banners behind him ended up wrong because I couldn't get the floor texture to match the perspective lines perfectly in both directions... I hate perspective :P

I also feel like maybe there's a bit too little air above his head. But if I crop it to the left and add to the height I'll end up with a square image... I rather liked this format that I have.... oh well, will give it a think. (Was thinking wall calendar, it being a zodiac and all...)

I had intended to work on Aries today but I got sidetracked (no surprises there), among other things by the FB "Sketch Dailies" where apparently the latest character to paint (tyesterday's by now) was Mystique. Didn't intend to spend very long but as usual everything takes longer than I'd like. Anyway, here's the "sketch" or whatever to call it.

Now I guess I need to go hang up the laundry to dry before I forget about it completely...

Thanks Dom, Dave
It sure is a bit faster to paint at 72 ppi instead of 300 :P Will try to get some work in on Aries today, though...

Another Sketch Dailies from FB. The topic Baobhansith was posted on the 19th and it took me three days.... So much for a quick sketch :P
I tried to do a "pencil drawing" in ArtRage but ended up cheating quite a bit...

A baobhansith has nothing to do with star wars but is a scottish kind of vampire. :)
