Thanks guys.
I was thinking the bakcground might be a bit too smooth and wondering how and where to add the christmas greetings... Dom's suggestion gave me an idea which I just had to try straight away. This was just a quickie so I'm not sure, but I think it might work with larger letters and more space between them... Thoughts?

And thanks Dom for helping me kill two birds zombies with one stone.

Nice idea on the writing. It definitely enhances it. ... Maybe add some shadows behind the spruce to set it in place, showing the relation to the wall. (Though I'm looking at it from work, so it's hard to tell if you already did this)

I get sketchy around pencils! ...=D

But I did red last year :P

EDIT: Guess there's not that much Christmas red in there, either, though... more brownish, pinkish and generally murky

It is remarkable how well red and green go together. Over a dark background too it would make a lovely, cosy scene!

Everything's on the right!!!

how about a couple of holly leaves with bright red berries at the front? That would take away my ache :D

I was going to suggest holly too, but didn't know if that would over-crowd the vegetation portion. But that would allow for the red berries you mention. That, or maybe add a red ribbon or similar item to the bottom area? Table clothe or place mat, etc.

I was going to suggest red berries, like cranberries would really compliment the green leaves in the foreground and the background should be gold with some more candles to make it seem like its sparkling.

The more I look at this picture the more I like it as all the details slowly reveal themselves. But on first glance there is one area that initially seems confusing to the eye (well, my eye at least)

The background and foreground elements are quite close in hue and value and although losing edges in shadows is always a good idea losing them in midtones can create a bit of spatial ambiguity especially as it coincides with the underside of that circular bit at the top of the candle holder. If you're going to add more elements then one here might work or instead just darken the area at the back to make the candle move forward.

And forgive me for scrawling clumsily over your lovely detailed work.

You're forgiven! :)

Thanks for pointing that bit out - so far I've been focusing on one thing at a time so I hadn't noticed. The spruce is still not finished, but I'll certainly keep in mind how I can keep the foreground and background apart, when I continue :)
