I think I might have oopsied.

Everyone keeps telling me about the Dawnguard, vampire hunters, in that fort near Riften. Well, I uhm, cleared a fort the other day and there were loads of dead vampires inside. So uhm... I think I killed the Dawnguard? maybe?

Edit: Can't recall them being called anything but bandits and uhm... well, many of them were magicians, but they sure didn't seem friendly... 

I took (no, I didn't steal it) a horsey to go check on a place where I had been attacked by a dragon, got lost, got back to riften, got lost again, finally found the right place (and I'm not sure that dragon attack was ever saved because the wolves weren't dead and attacked me and the horsey )

Anyway, I went onwards and found some odd looking place with some nasty magicky fellow attacking a giant so I waited until the giant died and then looted his corpse. Then I decided I needed to go back to Whiterun for my food and ingredient storage so I could make more potions and food for healing and... then I alt+tabbed while the screen was loading and everything went black and I had to restart the computer and I have NO IDEA when I last saved.

It was definitely before I acquired a giant's toe.

Edit: Luckily the game apparently autosaved right after - or rather, it probably auto saved when I opted to fast travel. 

Dawnguard is one of the DLCs that was added later and it starts in a separate area that's not on the map. To get to this you have to go right down to the bottom right corner of the map and go through a canyon and then you meet some friendly people. So I don't think you've "oopsied".
I haven't started that one yet but I've heard that when you do you start experiencing deadly vampire attacks in cities so be wary.

I have never managed to Alt-Tab in any game. Not sure if my PC can cope with running a game and something else in the background (it's bad enough when Windows decides to update and my frame rates turn into a slideshow) plus I always play in that exclusive full-screen mode which seems to mess that up in other ways.

Currently I'm trying to remember how to get from Whiterun to Riverwood on foot (or rather, horseback, as I went and bought Allie outside Whiterun). It's pouring so I can't see a thing, but I need to catch rainy weather fish, so I need to get to the fishing spot. Only I can't find the bloody way and by the time I get there I'm sure the skies will be blue again

Leave Whiterun, turn left. As you get to the bridges turn right and climb next to the waterfall.

Is Lydia running behind you as you ride off.

Yes she is, and she keeps running into the bum of my poor horse showing it forward when I've stopped. One of these days she's going to "accidentally" shove me off a cliff, I'm sure.

and uhm, I usually take the other route, slightly to the right from Whiterun, past the tower of the dragon attack and over the mountains. I was actually exactly where I was supposed to be when I came here to whine about not finding the way I only didn't see it in the fray of being attacked by a sabre tooth. Which reminds me, I now have to find a shrine of some sort as I have contracted two diseases, one from a wolf bite and one from the lion... Maybe those first stones will do... I can't quite recall.

But I WAS right. By the time I reached Riverwood the rain had stopped and it's now a lovely sunny day.

And now there's a dragon about and I am sort of hiding at the entrance to embershard mine, but I had to leave Allie out in the open. I do hope the dragon won't come and barbeque her...

Edit: Oh and those particular stones don't work like shrines. So no curing the diseases there... Can't recall any shrines in Riverwood at all, so I guess I need to get back to Whiterun, or Riften, again... 

There is an outdoor shrine close to that area. (Maybe a bit South-West.)
I don't think it's on the map but I remember seeing one on my travels around Lakeview.

Where the hell have all these big wide trucks and vans come from? And at this time of night too!

 

Oh, of course. This one's a driving mission and so the traffic has to be much worse than it normally is.
