I had a quick little go on No Man's Sky...

...and if I hear that computery voice warn me about my suit's thermal protection just one more time then I'll... I'll... :shakefist:
...well, I'll probably go and find some more sodium to charge it up.

There's a lot more resource harvesting and crafting than I would like but at least there aren't any clunky loading screens. :)

Have you started jumping between solar systems yet? I've forgotten what it's called, but it tends to get a bit boring, even if it's more swirly colours than loading screens. Or maybe rather swooshy colours. :dumb:

Also I really should be in bed. Dang. :sleepy:

I didn't go to a new solar system but I did fix the ship, leave the planet, test the "swirly colour" engines and then... had to return to the same planet. :eyeroll:
And I did have to actually land rather than fast travelling there. :)
But the way the landscape "pops in" as you descend shows why other games want to do it differently.

I did feel that the resource stuff was too grindy. The format felt like I was constantly being given tasks that I couldn't do because I needed 75 bits of (RANDOM MATERIAL). And then at one point I was shooting away to get 50 bits of carbon when my mining laser cut out. I was informed it needed charging and to do that I needed... some more bits of carbon! That's what I'm trying to harvest! :shakefist:

Overall it still feels a bit like an early access indie game that's lacking the polish of a final release, even after all the years and updates. Like all those corrupted logs that you have to read in silence that spell out the sound effects of the glitches (krrrzt) as if they're really supposed to be audio logs but they don't have the budget for more voice acting.

Never really thought about having to read the sound effects :D

Also you can always harvest the very basest materials even without charging the better tool, as far as I recall... And those resources (sodium and carbon) becomes considerably less of a problem later.

Oh and you have to go do an excavation too. Those are fun - the first time. Then you realise every site is exactly the same (as with the big crashed freighters...) Anyway, it is kind of fun travelling around trying to find species you really like and ships that are really cool and so on. :)

Edit: Oh, and I forgot about the dinosaur bones! :excited: That is, I mean, fossil finds. Well, actually those are mostly fun because some are really valuable. But I like that the aspect exist even if they aren't even prehistoric (if I remember correctly the finds usually vary in age between hundreds of years and thousands of years old... so it's more like excavating the middle ages or ancient egypt, I guess.)

Yes, I liked all the strange creatures wandering around (and I like that in Starfield too... when they don't attack) and I thought it was clever in the way they distort the display whenever the conditions get dangerous. It made everything seem more alien and increased the sense of panic and disorientation. :argh:

Oh dear, I guess you haven't got far enough in Starfield yet  I look forward to hearing about it when it happens  (it's not audio log related though).

The CK (or something) is making my screen act up and go black again.
I wonder what's causing it? I can't recall it ever happening before yesterday (well, Chrome does occasionally go black when I scroll through photos from house listings. Usually between floorplan 1 and floorplan 2, for some reason... Stupid new computer :pout: )

Is it an overheating thing because of the warmer weather?
Maybe laptops don't like summer either. :dumb:
