No, I haven't suddenly become better. Today it spawned as a normal levelled dragon instead of a super-difficult Ancient one.
So with that done I continued my walk and collected my giant killing reward (only 100 gold??? ) and set off to the college to inquire about the Elder Scroll.
Annoyingly the orc librarian talks to me but doesn't give me any of the important information that he goes to get.
I've had the same conversation with him several times now and I can't seem to get him to hand it over. Do I have to pickpocket him or something? Kill him and loot the body?

*googles*

Apparently he's put the books on the table and I didn't notice.

EDIT:
Even though I defeated that dragon it apparently killed Dravynea in Kynesgrove.
Didn't really know her but I still feel a bit sad about that.

You didn't even notice she was gone

Edit - Though after googling her name I see I didn't even know who she was   (I thought she was some modded follower of yours... )

No, I just got the inheritance message from the courier while I was in Windhelm.

Anyway I've now been to see the mad fellow (after falling through the ice a few times ) and I can finally get into Blackreach!
Obviously I have to make my way back and fall through the ice a few more times before any of that happens.

I'm pretty sure I've been able to access Blackreach without any mad fellows being included. Or any falling through the ice. But I do think I know what you refer to, anyway.

I thought you needed that "something" from the mad fellow to activate/open the lift thing that goes down to Blackreach.
I dunno.
I haven't been able to go there before so-

Fancy meeting you out here again. Not that I was looking for you. I was actually trying to find a bear to photograph. You haven't seen a bear, have you?
Not up here, obviously. I mean down on the ground. It's a bit hard to spot them when you're in a plane zooming by at several hundred miles an hour.
At least I'm not crashing as much now.

Maybe you do. I can't recall. I just know there's more than one way down there... But perhaps they're all unavailable until you've been down in the right place, first...

Edit: Maybe you have to activate those ways from down there...
