But the space to download is smaller than the one to extract and install, but the info on GOG implies it's the other way around.

Anyway I found something called Arc (not ARK) which turns out was for the Star Trek game I tried, once, in 2020. Getting rid of that freed up another 15 GB

I suspect Skyrim will still bring me into the red again, though... Maybe

I can't find anywhere that says 24GB. Maybe they're just adding up the two 12GBs of each version just to be extra confusing.

Skyim has been purchased.

But Subnautica Below Zero is still updating on the Epic launcher, so I guess installing Skyrim will have to wait...

I paused the Subnautica update at 40% and started installing Skyrim... It's downloading 24 GB at a speed of < 1MB/s...

I've calculated that it will take at least 7 hours at this rate.
