The thing I remember most about that era of gaming was that you had to make your own maps.
I recall playing loads of these games with a sheet of A4 paper at the side of the computer and every time you reached a new room you had to quickly sketch it down with a pen before you died and as you progressed you had to keep taping more sheets of paper together to fit it all on.
I think I also downloaded the previous PC remake of this game once and struggled to get anywhere due to the absurdly difficult requirements of having to do pixel-perfect jumps all the time. I wonder if this version is more forgiving.

I preferred Knight Lore and the Batman game that was basically the same thing. This was the greatest game ever when it was first released.

Yes, the Batman game was another great one.
But the double character switching of Head Over Heels was something that I'd never seen before and the puzzles/level design that exploited it was genius.
I'm not sure I ever had Knight Lore although I was obviously aware of it.
I also remember having the 3D Game Maker that let you create your own games in this style. Not that I achieved anything with it.

Knight Lore was probably closer to the Head Over Heels idea as you had puzzles that required human or werewolf form to complete them. I believe I had HOH at some point (I think it was eventually on a magazine cover) but didn't really play it much.
EDIT - I was heavily in to Boulder Dash IV construction kit, and spent many hours building my own levels.

Stoopid crying baby booby trap blew my arm and head off!
Thankfully there's a mattress in a rusty caravan over there.

That's better.
Somehow my doggy companion doesn't seem to take quite as much damage as I do as we travel across this Fallout wasteland. And he's quite useful at attacking stuff and warning me about- Oh, wait. He's growling again. What's coming to attack us now?
A herd of mad two-headed cows!
Come on, Dogmeat. Let's kill them!
Mmm, Brahmin steaks.
