I didn't get much practice in between classes but here's more watercolour. It's a crappy photo but as you can obviously tell we painted a line of snowy or frosty trees against a starry winter sky... :dumb:

Today's exercise. I am more and more convinced I am not cut out for watercolours. Or maybe they're not cut out for me? :hmm:

They're certainly challenging. :aha:

I started out painting with watercolours and in a way I was glad I did cos when I experimented with acrylics later it all felt much easier as if I had made progress without actually doing anything.

I feel rather like I've made no progress at all since last time I tried watercolours, which might be 35-40 years ago

I like that second one. That vignette style against the white paper reminds me of little illustrations in children's books.

You still seem to be struggling with darker contrast, which is usually a consequence of either too much water on the brush or saturated paper.
It might be interesting to come back to them and paint some delicate, darker layers over the top when the paint and paper has fully dried.
Or maybe add some extra details with a pen to create an "ink and wash" look. :hmm:

Yup been considering using a pen on top, for line work/detail.
Might need to try getting shadows in there too - I was rather a bit too focused on the colour of the coat, I think :dumb:

Still looking like something I could have painted as a kid, but I guess that's what happens when you forget to practice between classes :dumb:

You've got some nice darks in this one, especially those shadowed feathers beneath the tail. :aha:
The only bit that doesn't quite work is the feet and it looks as if the colour has bled a little into the wet paper again.
Be patient and let it dry. :stare:

I was very patient for once. The feet didn't bleed, I was just painting badly. :dumb: I kept making splotches
