I just stand there with a shotgun, no need for cover, and wait for all the pirates to come out of the same door one by one.

Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! etc.

And I looted some good stuff in here, including a mirrored stealthy spacesuit that still keeps my axe being useful. And I can be almost invisible while Sarah is ...erm... not being sneaky.

That might be where I went last night, as I also have a stealthy space suit. When I crouch and stay still I turn invisible, which doesn't stop people looking at me, or from seeing when I steal something right in front of them 

I also finally found a planet that had a somewhat interesting environment instead of the usual empty rocky desert that most of them have had so far, along with a couple of species I hadn't seen before. There was also a fair amount of life wandering around. Still only about 3 species living on the entire planet though. 

It was an abandoned listening post. There's apparently one that you go to during a story/quest (which may be the one you're talking about) but they also spawn randomly on any old planet. I just found one while looking for resources in the mountains. If you search around inside there should be a magazine called Peak Performance that boosts your carryweight by 5kg.

I tried to do some weapons mod crafting last night using some trial and error seeing as the game doesn't want to tell me about it and apparently I need to do more research. And I can only research after I've levelled up more. So I won't be crafting any weapons mods after all.
I also had a look at the ship building/customisation thing and found it very confusing indeed. Will probably have to watch YouTube videos before trying it again.

Ah, mine was questy. But all these encounters look alike and play out the same way most of the time 

I did play around with the ship editing/building for a little while. It was initially confusing but is actually not all that complicated. The different parts seem to only connect to specific other parts, and also only seem to work in a certain orientation. So you seem to have to go through parts and try them out to find out what will fit where you want it. It is a little clunky like the rest of the crafting stuff. I didn't keep any of the changes I made to the ship, but I might have another paly around with it to build something later ( I need more money ). I also made some mods for gear and weapons, but as is usually the case, I found much better stuff while looting anyway.

are you making game mods from inside the game?

Mods as in crafting mods for weapons/suits/helmets etc. Things you stick on the item to add various buffs and effects.

Oh, like runes and such in other games....

Yes, "upgrades" would be a better word but they're called mods in the game.
