I actually apply principles of painting 3D models, like tanks and whatnot. The same weathering techniques seem to work quite well in digital too.

I know some of the lines of perspective are all over the place, but I don't really mind as the overall weight and feel of the metal brute is what I am going for. I will have to do a more careful version one day!
