I gave up. What I had was massively overweight, and I couldn't add parts I needed because my ship building isn't high enough. It also kept forcing me to use random landing gear on different parts of the ship 

 I also think that what ship you begin with has some impact on what you can build (because for some dumb reason you can't just build something from scratch).

I struggle to even navigate around that ship builder interface. I end up manically rotating around a point I'm not even trying to look at.
