To be honest I was never really that into the book of the BFG. If the film's on over Christmas I'll probably watch it though.

No, I wasn't either, then again I didn't read very much as a kid. I remember being stuck on page 42 of The Hobbit for at least three whole years!
But The BFG is one of those iconic "British" things that everyone of a certain age is aware of even if that knowledge doesn't always extend to other parts of the world.

I also found Watership Down to be a hard slog to read and never finished it after several attempts.

I read quite a bit, but I do remember not getting through the first LotR book, first time. I tried again about a year later and after that I finished them all. Several times

and that big friendly giant thing does ring a faint bell... Though I'm not sure I'm reminded of the same giant... (mine's a robot I think?) - Not a story I ever read or heard or watched anyway, just a reference seen here and there...

You are probably thinking of the Iron Giant.
