I believe he was played by the Necktie Murderer   I can hum the theme tune, but I don't recall ever seeing more than maybe one episode, if that 

After posting it just a few seconds before you I'm now singing it too.

EDIT: And I've just looked up the new theme and it doesn't have that sing-a-long quality.

It doesn't have the same 70ies quality at all. I don't even remember it.

I'm watching John Carter again and trying to enjoy the bits without any silly jumping.
Edit: ...and Woola. I'd forgotten about Woola.

Now watching another British murder show called Rosemary & Thyme. One plant pathologist and one ex-cop who likes gardening, now solving crime.

I've heard of them as well. I was beginning to think that the only British detectives I'd heard of were Dutch and Belgian.

I've never heard of him. I'm sure I would remember someone with a name like that 

Rosemary is sitting at her computer and someone tries to shoot her through the window.
She stands up and they shoot again, and miss again.
She promptly runs off to tell Thyme that they're being shot at and then rushes back into the room someone was shooting at, turns on the lights and stands in the doorway (into the garden) shouting at them for breaking the window.
