em...'s caricatures

Wow, I would never have guessed that the previous one was a greyscale picture. I would have imagined it being done on a coloured ground due to the variation in the skin tones.
Did it take a lot of colour over painting or was it just a quick colour layer adjustment /gradient map?

The greyscale was adjusted to give an overall sepia-ish tint, then the other colouring was done on a layer set to "overlay".

That's it. No extra painting beyond that.

The darkness of the hair looks wonderfully deep and intense due to the way you control the more muted values elsewhere.
And that big bow of the top lip really nails her expression and attitude.

kazky - The feel of an old Hollywood photo is what I was aiming for. Seems to have worked okay

Valence - I wanted the strongest contrast between the hair and the face, so that eye wasn't drawn too much to her other attributes. I did need to add the very strong shadows in the folds of the dress at the bottom of the pic so it wasn't too top heavy (if that's not the best choice of words).

Lovely work as always em

I really like the Jesy Nelson one. It immediately caught my attention when I saw it on that other site. The face has such a lovely shape and structure to it, and the simple, uncluttered style makes it all look easy and effortless.

(And although you haven't posted it here I thought the Kevin Costner one was very interesting too with the strong silhouette and the bright overexposed sky. It really captured the mood of that film.)

Been a while since I've been at the site, but love the Lucy Lui and Forrest Whitaker. They're all really great, but you completely captured Lucy's features that I think make her so beautiful to look at and the color for Forrest works so well with his skin tone.

Like I said though, they're all really great and I certainly appreciate the looseness of your lines and brush strokes. Makes the pieces feel like they have a certain movement to them
