I jiggled the pose around a bit and did a bit more work...
There's still much I don't like about it. Skin tones, face structure, foreshortening, perspective etc. But I'm getting there... slooowly.

I think the face is looking pretty good. It's got a nice intensity in those eyes.
EDIT: I googled images of Mr Newton and oh my G, they could all be of different people. But I think you're using a reference made when he was fairly young? And which does resemble his death mask. Though when I saw the death mask I thought it looked like a slimmer Tarantino and then...
Is it just me or could "McKay" play Mr Newton in the docudrama about his life?

Yeah I was using that painting that crops up immediately when you search for him. I never go too far for my references. 
To be honest, I'm not that bothered about the likeness (who knows what he really looked like) as long as I get the vague impression of him or someone like him. The distant eye still seems a little bothersome to me.
But... hands!

I watched the Stargate movie just the other week and was entertained by Kurt Russell's perfectly flat hair.
But I have never seen a single episode of any of the TV shows.

It should really read like, "Hands?!?!

The one holding the gun is acceptable enough but I'm struggling with the one brandishing the ID badge. Gonna have to google pics of Agent Mulder and maybe even do a complete redraw of that bit. Hopefully not. But maybe.
