I think I went a bit too dark with the bird's body but it'll do. It didn't take as long as I thought once I'd switched to my PC and ArtRage.

Maybe the "bird-darkening" quest will come later.

I just hope my dog portraits turn out that well.
I’m nearly done on my portraits of the 9 grandkids.
Here’s where I’m at. There’s still some work to do on the central upper face and I need to spend the rest of this morning on the girls creating a better transition from hair to background as it’s a bit jarring at the moment.
Not sure how much detail you can see in this upload as the final image is 16” x 20” and I’ve had to reduce the file size to share it on here.
I’ve now got a few days for the dog portraits before I need to send it off to the printers.
No smudge tool was harmed in the making of this image.

I think the girl at the 1 o'clock position could use a little more light on the forehead to compete with the values of the next girl on the right. All the other faces seem to fit well together.
As for the background... if I had to do it then I'd probably use an airbrush to add some subtle drop shadows on a layer beneath the faces to lift them away from the canvas. Then again, I overuse that gimmick far too much so perhaps it wouldn't be a good idea after all.
