It's all a scam. I am expecting to uncover some dark sinister secret to the village. They are probably aliens using humans as slaves and then eating them once they are too weak to continue mining and crafting stuff.

Well Grimalkins ARE aliens... As for the others... You might be on to something.
Maybe they're all robots and Najuma has a visible prosthetic leg and there are two galdurs just so we won't even consider them not being of flesh and blood...
