I remember liking the way you could extrude blocks out of the ground plane but I could never produce anything that didn't look like it was made out of Lego.
These days my attempts at 3d stuff begin and end with Blender.

I remember trying Blender.... 20 years ago? 15 maybe :p It was awful - I didn't understand a thing! But then I didn't understand much of the other 3d software programs I tried either, which is why I stuck with handcoding, which is now completely obsolete and useless

Blender's interface is a bit awkward. But it's amazing how much stuff it actually can do... when you get the hang of it.
You can do normal polygon modelling, sculpting, texture painting, camera tracking, run all kinds of simulations, build a game with the logic blocks, use it as a video editor... and probably more! The other day I was trying to stitch clothes!
But I didn't know Sketchup had gone browser based. When did that happen? I remember having it installed ages ago, unless I imagined that.
I may have to check it out again.

Get designing/building/whatever-you-call-it!
These days I prefer to try and sculpt 3D things rather than the technical polygon extruding shenanigans. It seems a bit more intuitive that way, although I do always end up with rather lumpy looking faces.
I can sort of get the general forms of things but the final stage of getting the details and surface to look right is always beyond me.
And that's before the hell that is texturing.
