also, this forum is a little sneaky: when you post a url it turns automatically into a link once the post is submitted but it just looks like a long line of gibberish before that...

Sounds like you actually did everything correctly. As Charlotte says, the forum will automatically convert a URL into a link when you paste of type it into the body of your post... BUT, it only works if it has a space in front of it, so if you had something like:
would result in (no link):

WIP1:http://www.someawesomewebaddress.com

where the URL is hard up against the text before it, then it wont recognise it as an address and will treat it just like regular text. So this: would be how to fix it (i.e. insert a space at the beginning). and would give you (linky goodness):

WIP1: www.someawesomewebaddress.com

Banj that's exactly what happened...I think. I thought there was a space but it might of gotten deleted in my editing and redoing multiple times. Will be more careful next time. Thanks.
