I think a great way to avoid losing the values in your greyscale painting when adding color is.. to use the "color" layer to apply colors, that way it doesn't change the values just the hues. Also if you make a "multiply" layer above all the other layers and fill it with pure black, you can turn it off and on to make your pic greyscale again, to make sure the values didn't change with the color layer. Useful when you have a lot of different color layers too.

Haven't tried using Black, but I use a layer set to color mode, and filled with White. Guess they both work, odd?

So does a layer set to saturation and filled with black. That's my preferred method.

I think there are many ways to view the image in greyscale. Not sure which gives the most accurate depiction, though - they usually change the values slightly in different ways. Or at least that's my impression when fiddling with it.

Any an all misspellings are henceforth blamed on the cats.

Pretty cool. Who knew? ... but when just checking, I didn't see any change between them, so if there is a change, seems to be minuscule.
