I've never seen the spam post message, but it's definitely a reference to HAL.

Oh, ok. Being I don't know of any other Dave's here, except maybe Dave B. (who I haven't seen in quite some time and not even sure if he's registered on the new site?) just thought to ask in case I unwittingly offended someone.

Would this be from the first Space Odyssey movie (1960's or so) or the newer one? I honestly tried watching the original one, but didn't make it much passed 20-25 minutes or so. And never have watched the newer version.

Yep, it's all from the 1st one. Arguably the greatest film ever made (and one of my faves), but it is a tough watch, all those screaming apes and no human dialogue for nearly half an hour.
You need to be committed to it in order to see the HAL and Dave bits later on. "Open the pod bay doors!" Etc etc.

And you would be correct, Valence. Because that is exactly what I didn't get passed. Guess I just figured the entire movie was going to be that way? ... Who knows, maybe one day I will try watching it again, albeit, skipping over the "ape's only" part.

It's ok. I didn't get the HAL reference but it made me chuckle none the less.
