Underwater

Brief: Because May is Mermay and at least two of us are looking forward to the official release of Subnautica Below Zero, in May, this month's challenge theme is UNDERWATER. As Banj usually says, take the title and interpret it into a masterpiece of art :)

POLL NOW OPEN UNTIL (at least) JUNE 8th.

Deadline: Monday the 31st of May at midnight (UTC).

This thread is where you post your final entries. Works in progress (WIPs) should be posted over here:
cgartnexus.com/index.php/forums/challeng...2021-underwater-wips

- No chatter in the finals thread – if you have questions, post them in the WIP thread or PM an admin.
- Feedback is allowed & encouraged together with the voting and in the WIP thread.
- Deadline is given in UK time (midnight UTC) with a grace period of 5 minutes for getting the post sorted.

I don't think I'll be doing anything else with mine, either... So, here's my underwater dragon. I like to think it hatched from that egg I did for the Hatchery challenge. Even if it doesn't look very Subnautica-ish.

First wips: cgartnexus.com/index.php/forums/challeng...nderwater-wips#35042
Last wip: cgartnexus.com/index.php/forums/challeng...nderwater-wips#35049

and yes, the colours ended up blue. Ish.

The good thing with very few submissions is nobody comes la.... oh wait...

Anyway, poll is now open. Everyone can vote, you do not need to be one of the participants. In fact it's not much fun when only the participants vote... I should shut up now. But you are welcome to post feedback with your vote!

Votes are open until June 8th or anytime thereafter until we remember to close it. But do vote before the 8th, just in case. :)

Well I participated and I'm voting. And I'm voting for you. Yes, you! So there. :stare:

Love the imaginative design here. You went on quite a journey from your initial mermaid idea and it was a decision worth taking. The end result is a creature I've never seen or thought of before and it's rendered in a way that makes it very believable. The pose and expression give it a curious, inquisitive look that adds to its character and makes me feel like I'm intruding on its home.
Even though everything is mostly blue there's still enough variety to stop it looking monochrome and the graininess in the colour transitions give an understandable sense of deep waters whereas mine looks far too clear.
Finally, my favourite part of the image is that glorious tail. The delicate details of its structure are beautifully done and the lighting is very well controlled to create an almost bio-luminescent radiance that makes it quite hypnotic as if that's the way it lures and catches its prey.

Nicely done. :)

Nice images, both. But I really like the Underwater Dragon. (I am a bit partial to creature designs as well) but again both nice pics.

I get sketchy around pencils! ...=D

Thanks guys :)

I voted for Valence :)
I like the variety of colours and the texture in the brush strokes. I'm a little undecided about the sub, maybe because it's focusing on a similar creature as the big one (jellysquidfish?) and the difference in size seems enormous. I kind of feel like the big one doesn't need the little sub in the picture - and at the same time the corner with the sub could actually make it's own picture. But both parts still add to the sense of underwater wonder.
