Are they a combo of zBrush with some painting over the top?

Cool looking characters. Love them, especially the faces.

Questions: Aren't Champignons a form of mushrooms? So are these fungus people?

Thanks. No Zbrush or 3d. Starting with the heads, I took a photo of some cooking mushrooms and then flipped the image to make a symmetrical opposite and ended up with something like the bottom left image (below) and then painted into them. The bodies and poses are painted and scraps from some of the other mushroom pics were used to add additional texture. Hope that makes sense.

Wow! What a fantastic idea to create characters that way and it works so well. I would like to know did you have the end result in mind before you started with the mushroom photo or was it just a case of try and see what happens?

Thanks. On this one, no. It was more akin to a 'what do you see?' Rorschach psychology test. But once I had one done, it was fairly easy to 'riff' off of that and quickly establish a cohesive look that could be transferred to other characters within the race of creatures just created. I'd say it's definitely better used as an idea generator than it is for recreating something known.
