Your "meh" hands are better than ALL my hands.
The background looks good to me although I would change the distant mountain a bit. At the moment it's the same colour as the beard and forms a tangent with one of the little curls. But I like what you've done with the trees. The way you've positioned them creates a nice bit of space behind the head.
