I've already messed up my chances of getting a golden play button by not titling the video "OMG!!! I Can't Believe This Actually Worked!!!!!!!?" and adding a thumbnail of me pulling a stupid face with a dozen arrows pointing to random parts of the image. And Amazon affiliate links in the description. I already failed at the first Youtube hurdle. I suck.

Aw.

I'm starting to suspect that you actually read those tips pinterest keeps sending... Like, one of the most recent things they suggested for me was "How to write blog post titles that get crazy clicks and shares" (using several different fonts, colours and text sizes to spell it out, of course). You read those things, don't you? :stare: How else would you know all those things, and how you failed them? huh? huh?

No, but I was about to go there until I realised it didn't say "how to get crazy chicks".

That's not too different from the way I tried to do it but you cleverly left out all the mistakes I made.
I think using the voxel remesh was the biggest error. Once that was done it was impossible to get a diagonal edge back. I think quite a lot of my errors come from remeshing too early and then struggling with the excess of vertices.

After reading up on it a bit I'm gonna try to do that snap poly modelling idea next by repeatedly extruding a single edge across the surface of the body and then using the solidify function to give it thickness. That should (should?) create a strap that's automatically tight to the body without having to nudge it around... maybe.

That is another possibility, and I did start recording a version of doing it that way. The downside of that method is that it's less controllable and  much easier to end up with a wonky line and different widths along the length of the strap due to snapping to different parts of the underlying mesh. I'd recommend using fairly long polygons if you are going that way and gradually add edges in after you have created the main loop.

I knew there'd be a hidden snag.
The ideas that seem great in my head never seem to work in practise. :)

You could probably also extrude along a curve, but then you still have to create and position a curve to extrude along, so you wouldn't be saving any time and work. Any method you use will require a certain amount of tweaking and adjustment really.
