After my poor experiences with those leather straps I've been playing about with downloadable textures from ambientCG.com and the bump/normal options of "proper" textures are a little more complicated than the sloppy efforts I was using.

...but I haven't.
However I have fixed the different scales of the noise texture between the ground and the snowman. Don't know why they were different first time cos it's the same material. Maybe something to do with the "Object" co-ordinate mapping option?
And I thought I'd check out how it looked now with HDR lighting instead of finding out that it doesn't work much later like I did with the Orc. Also need to work out how to fade the ground plane with a mist cos that cutoff point is far too harsh when you're not using area lights.
EDIT: And volume scatter creates some super weird effects. But not the ones I want.
