I agree with Charlotte about the harsh(er) tones at the rear of her head but the face, especially round her eyes and cheekbones is lovely - love all those skin tones too. All this hard work is really paying dividend.

Yeah, I don't know what I was doing with that dark area. It was one of the first things I put in, I think I planned to bleed it out to soften it but then forgot.

If you are emulating watercolour, shouldn't you be working light to dark?

(Because Valence would be too nice to)

I'm going for the "look" but without the hassle!
So I didn't work light to dark, I didn't stretch the paper beforehand (Pfft, never do that anyway! ) and I certainly didn't wash any brushes afterwards.

And speaking of not stretching paper, I did actually paint in the paper cockling to emulate my real life laziness.



And here's another thing...

I was just wondering how you were approaching it. I would still be in the mindset of using the same basic process and techniques I would if I were using the real media I was attempting to mimic but with some translation to the digital tools and shortcuts available.

Even though it removes some of the watercolour hassles it also adds a couple of new ones. Namely having to decide when you want it wet or dry and also the dilemma of choosing a lighter colour or thinning a darker colour.
Depending on which of these choices you make ArtRage does allow you to work lighter tones over (or into) dark areas and it's initially very confusing.
The way I'm working at the moment (well, in that last pic) is to use two layers. One set to multiply that I use just for wet blended washes and a normal layer on top for more opaque details.

You can do it all on one layer by toggling the InstaDry option but I still keep forgetting whether I've left it on or off and angry frustration ensues.

Not with all that dried acrylic paint over the end of it it doesn't.

Val: Right. er... right. What you just said. That sounds pretty much exactly why I never got to grips with watercolours in the real world OR in artrage...
