I started having a go at this, but had to stop and deal with some site problems, so this wasn't finished.

It's mostly colour layers with a couple of overlay layers to create more glow, no changes to values and just using an airbrush in Painter (default Soft Round brush equivalent in PS). You can have the layered PSD here to see how the layers are arranged: www.mediafire.com/download/362r1vb1ntzzn...tardust_clr_test.psd

I like this Banj.

It shows that the whole piece does not need to be elaborated upon with colour. Plus, this method has created a lovely atmosphere that I think is really in fitting with the character and story. Thanks for having a go! But, if you do get a chance, I would like to see what you would have done with it had you had more time to do all you wanted with it.

These collaborations are very helpful!

Everything's on the right!!!

It's like driving abroad!

Thought I'd have another go but this time with the dark hair/ purplish colour scheme.

I changed the hair using a Gradient Map adjustment layer, and used a Colour layer to change the blue light to a purple and pasted in the original greyscale at low opacitiy to bring back some details that had been lost in the glow.
Also having been super-impressed with Banj's image and the way it had a lovely more unified mood to the colour I tried improve the lighting consistency using another Gradient Map on top that went from a bright purple to a dark blue and then to black.
When colouring greyscales there's often a danger of getting a "Colouring-In" look with far too much local colour and the final Gradient Map can really help with that by giving it the whole image unified ambient lighting.

Also I noticed that by switching to darker hair I lost that lovely silhouette that you'd created for the character so after failing with a bit of rim light I instead put a bit of a dull glow in the background to make the top of the head pop back into view.

Oh and now that I'm back on my PC I'll try and post the link to that video I mentioned before.

Thanks for sharing the video, Valence!

I tried to color a grayscale painting of mine once only to almost fail miserably. I ended up saving it by spending way too much time correcting these exact same mistakes that Sycra's talking about in the video. I hadn't really thought about inherent values up until today, so that came about really useful to me.

I'm thinking about painting in grayscale for a while until I master values, so I'll be following this thread closely.
