Attos chips, dips, chains and Wips

Here goes with a Wips thread then.
Any and all comments are very much appreciated, we're all here to learn right?

1st image is something Ive been mulling over for some time.
I love dwarfs they are my all time favourite fantasy race (and with my recent increase in weight, my beard and my penchant for strong ales I may soon look like one).
I love their diminutive barrel chested stature, their gruff fatalistic humour and the way they throw themselves into battle with scant regard for the odds of survival.
I thought I would start to depict a few 'specialist' dwarf warriors, firstly the Giant slayers and the Troll slayers and focus on how they would take down their various opponents.

First sketch is still in early stages I intend to include more warriors in the fore ground distracting the giant with throwing axes, spears etc while the brave (stupid) little fella attempts to climb up to the head and deliver the fatal blow.

Need to roughen up the look of the giant and I'm not sure the anatomy on the dwarf sells his stature correctly.

Good start on the sketch. I would say that right now the dwarf looks more like a heroic Greek warrior taking on a giant. Probably the proportions. I usually think of bigger proportioned heads, and shorter legs in relation to the body.

Thanks Kod, I completely agree with you, his Mohawk is what I believe makes us both picture a Greek warrior, but your dead on with the legs and head. Im working on it now but I'm really struggling to keep it looking believable. I don't want him looking like a 'Narnia' dwarf - more of a 'warhammer' dwarf if you get me?

I was going to say the same as, Kodabble. Maybe along with making him more stout and widened the body structure. maybe adding some dwarf attire such as a horned helm, double battle axe, clothing, etc would also help sell him as a dwarf. You hardly ever see a dwarf wearing just a little clothing. :)

I get sketchy around pencils! ...=D

OK changed him up a bit - gonna have to go back and look at some ref but think his proportions are pretty much there

His proportions look more dwarflike now, but I think you might need another look at his legs anyway - they look to me to be different lengths and the foreshortening on his bent leg isn't very convincing. He seems to have a thigh almost as long as the other leg and then a fairly small lower leg; see if you can perhaps shortened the thigh some and perhaps make the lower leg look more massive/sturdier? Main issue though is that the bent leg looks longer than the straight leg...

Thanks Dom ill do my best to keep it at this standard as I work into it.

@ Charlotte yeah I noticed that after posting (note to self: leave it a bit and approach with fresh eyes before posting) but thanks because I was nt entirely sure what the issue was. Will try to correct today.

Don't worry about waiting before posting. Posting something is the perfect way to see things are wrong! :P At least for me - I always see a whole bunch of things the moment I've pressed that submit button...

Done a little more - hopefully sorted his leg out and added the extra dwarves. Think im gonna keep the horizon low - about a quarter of the image to exentuate the giants height. Now I just need to decide what type of giant to depict and whether to keep the foreground dwarves lightly armoured or not.

Edit: Wow now 1ve noticed the giants front leg is off! Guess that's tomorrows job.
