Re stretching a canvas

05 Jul 2014 17:56 - 05 Jul 2014 17:57 #498 by MJRolfe
I have a painting that the canvas was crap, and has a lumpy bump in the corner. I should have tossed the canvas right away, but I didn't (because I'm cheap), and I really like the painting on it. Does anyone have experience taking a canvas off the stretcher bars and re stretching it? Should I heat up the canvas with a blow drier to make the paint more elastic?

oh, because it matters a lot - the painting is acrylic. ;)

Hey, I tried this a few times with acrylics on canvas (with my wifes artwork that had been stored disastrously by one of her clients). I tried heating and doing it cold and everytime it turned into a car crash. This may have been my lack of skill or knowledge but everyone else I asked advice from either laughed at the idea straight off the bat or cautioned me against trying.
I guess it could depend on the severity of the damage but in my experience I'd say leave it alone unless your quite happy to damage the artwork beyond any semblance of repair.

Good luck!

No smudge tool was harmed in the making of this image.

Thanks, I managed to use those little stretcher pegs and tighten up the canvas a wee bit, which seems to have fixed the problem. I also just hit it with a layer of matte glaze, which I'm hoping might tighten it up a bit more.

Hopefully, I won't have to resort to anything more drastic.

Lesson learned - even if you think you're going to just goof about on a canvas, use a good one, 'cause it just might turn out. ;)

As a long time painter my best suggestion is to take it to the professionals actually. I find the craft stores are best at it honestly.

Thanks, if I ever need to do it, I'll remember that. I managed to dodge that bullet. ;)
