Mischief Software at half price

05 Jul 2014 14:39 - 05 Jul 2014 14:40 #446 by Charlotte
For those who hasn't seen this, Mischief is being offered at half price (US $ 32) until midnight July 7th.
I'll see if it's possible to be a bit mischevious and hotlink their own ad:

Well lookie, that worked (at least for me). Also they have a 15 day trial. Although it's not 15 days left until the offer ends, I've downloaded the trial to check it out.

Yeah... You might want somewhere to go, too:

Been playing with the trial and while it's cheap I'm in two minds about whether to buy it or wait until it's further developed.

Tried to make a pros/cons list too...
Pros:
It's responsive - not at all as laggy as ArtRage
The pens and crayons work fine for drawing
It feels fairly intuitive and easy to use (though I miss some hotkey functions of ArtRage like how to change the pen size or move the canvas)
You can zoom in (almost) indefinately without blur
Did I mention it's cheap?

Cons:
Very few brushes at the moment and none of them feel like "brushes". You have pencils, crayons, markers and such. All for drawing none for painting. Though painting works ok anyway I guess. Sort of.
No way to customise hot keys, brushes or pretty much anything.
The hotkeys don't work on European keyboards (and like I said they can't be customised either)
Limited support of formats (can import jpg and png, and export jpg, png and psd I think)
The website keeps reffering to their facebook page which is pretty much only covered in crap posts nothing to do with the program (things like "I'm up for some Mischief" and an image of a woman in underwear)
No layer blend modes. (So no painting greyscale to add colours later)

Pretty much all the lack of features are on their to-do list, but there's no saying how long it'll take. For the moment it's pretty much bare bones, except for that cool zoom function. But then again, it IS cheap...

This is what I played around with today. The bits done in greyscale went fairly smoothly while trying to paint with colour made me more aware that the brushes are either hard edged or very soft. It's hard to blend values or colours while also keeping sharp edges. Pretty much like ArtRage, there, I guess. (I suppose one would have to learn to use selections, though I didn't see a lasso tool or anything like a magic wand... Maybe I just missed them - it's hard to paint within the edges of something if all you can select are boxes. Minecraft for painting?)

Thanks for the update, though I have to say I've never heard of this program before. And from reading you post, doesn't sound like it has much in the way of customizing features yet. ... But the face you did looks pretty cool. :)

I get sketchy around pencils! ...=D

It's been mentioned in the IFX magazine - Nick Harris (Nickillus) used it for at least one of his workshop images. It seemed a bit further along when I read about it, though.

Ye, I remember reading about it too. I thought it sounded like quite a clever concept but I had thought that there would likely be some problems by not working with standard pixels. Sounds like it should be able to make some really nice smooth zoom animations which would be quite a cool feature.

I bought this quite a while ago, simply because of the infinite zoom, which is incredible, I haven't used it though, but then again I haven't used anything else recently! I think it will get more features and I think it will be one to watch.

Ya know Kaz, with the creation of the new site, one should be required to create a new pic! ;) ;)

not at all as laggy as ArtRage

ArtRage laggines is soon to be remedied (possibly) with a forthcoming 64bit update.
