Valence beat me to it... I was going to ask about the ball as well.

Now if you can create one that we could change the colors on, or even work with a color wheel... ;) New Color Ball? :D

I get sketchy around pencils! ...=D

Valence & Dave, yeah, it was part of the assignment on skin. Painting the the material ball for complex things like skin helps a lot. You can do either or. Use it as just a reference or color pick directly from it. It also helps to set up all the different light sources. Like on this one I have a yellowish key light, a blue and purple fill light coming from two other directions. Sometimes I'll just paint the ball in black and white so I know where the light is coming from in the image or just a quick easy way to figure out how to paint something without spending hours painting just to find out it's not working.

This is interesting, seeing you work with the same subject matter in different ways. I'd never think of doing anything like that. :)
One thing that does stick out in the first picture (you've almost resolved it in the second with the fuzzy facial hair) is the philtrum, that little wedge shape between the nose and the peaks of the top lip. If you touch it with your finger you can feel that it's a concave shape that dips inwards and this means that it usually has its highlight at the bottom, opposite the light source. In the first pic it's shaded dark at the bottom, making it look convex and this confuses the geometry of the top lip, a bit like those impossible shaped optical illusions.
I love that stylized ear though and one other thing that always pleases me is when I see those little wet highlights where the eyeball meets the lower lid. They always add that bit of extra life to the eyes and they work really well in both versions of this picture.

Thanks Valence and thank you for the feedback :) These are some sketches I did this morning before work. I keep drawing punk rock people for some reason.

Nice updates. With the post of the building there's a lot of dead space near the bottom and the white mist is creating a very sharp edge with the grass which is very jarring. I would soften that edge a bit. I get that you're trying to create some depth with the mist but the camera angle chosen and amount of space isn't enough to make it believable. Hope this helps.
