Forrest's Sketchbook of Art Junk!

06 Jul 2014 04:04 #589 by Forrestimel
I'm sad to see the old forums are shutting down, I wasn't very good at staying active on them so I'm going to try and be better at it on these forums and post around more and junk :) Gotta keep this place active after all.

To start the new sketchbook off here is some stuff from the last couple days and the start of a new illustration :)

So this week has been busy for me with my brother coming to town and 4th of July and all. Didn't have as much time as I wanted but that just means I'm cherishing the time I now have :)

So here's some more work on that earth elemental illustration and some studies I did for it, oh and a little portrait thing I did as a warm up this morning.

Thanks everyone :) Glad to be a part of the new forums

So here's what I did today. I'm not sure about giving the girl a backpack in the earth elemental image so I removed it for now, I think it gives for a better silhouette but I don't know. Right now the image looks super cluttered too just cuz I've been adding in photos and junk but I'll make sure to clear it all up and make it more readable soon :)

It's great to see how this is coming along! The cliff face looks really good, but I think the waterfall looks a little "attached" at the moment. But maybe you weren't finished. Anyhow I did a small paintover, hope you don't mind.

In your image, the surface of the water seems to follow the ragged edge of the rocks, which it wouldn't The surface of the water will remain flat and only flow at the lowest points - the exception is if there's a "bend" in the rock face, like in your reference/practice image higher up. The water forms two straight edges that meet at an angle, because of the angle in the cliff... There doesn't seem to be such a clear angle in your painting so I did two things (quick and dirty):

1) The protruding rock in the left waterfall should divide the stream of water as it passes
2) The right waterfall should be more flat at the top
EDIT: I also tried to push back soe of the rocks visible "above" the water as they'd stop the water from flowing where it flows, if they were right at the edge of the cliff. But they could be pushed back more.

I think it looks more realistic now, but you're the better painter! :P
