I kept thinking there should be sewers in Solitude, because of the mancovers (er...manholes? manholecovers???) and the little grates at the bottom of buildings, but I couldn't find them either - until the S & S questline led me there. Then one of those covers (thingies ) was clickable.

Nope, but I am only a few feet behind you. That last picture I posted after I showered was just before I stepped outside and got covered in goop like you, so I am pretty much where you are. I then went back inside and had another shower and calmed poor little Cletus down. The backseater on the radio informed me I will probably have to backtrack a long way to do something I should have done on the way but didn't before I go further 

I will have to investigate later because I switched off last night in the private room after washing the goop off. There must be a way to go back because backseat radio lady said to finish off any jobs I needed to do before continuing 

Maybe backseat radio is saying that because if you continue forward now, you won't be able to go back later for the reason Val stated?

Are you suggesting Valence heard Backseat radio warning him that he couldn't go back and he ignored it and carried on anyway?   

I did actually complete all my orders before I went there but was asked to do something else which I postponed because I had an urgent delivery against the clock that I had to do.
