I didn't read the Dune series either. Saw the movie with Kyle McLachlan and Sting and found it... well besides the really bad FX that would have been better left out (thinking of those space transport whale people thingies) I just thought it was rather... well, bad. :P Maybe one movie just couldn't do justice to a longer and more complex story... Mostly I don't like it when movies "go Messiah", like the final Matrix or that zombie one with Will Smith. Not to mention the Tom Cruise version of War of the Worlds. First people die right and left and then it turns out that God saved the day from the very beginning so we never needed to do a thing. Except die right and left. (Or in the case of Matrix there's the more obvious Messiah resemblance.)

I'm rambling I think... But there was that and the way McClachlans character (I've forgotten his name, Prince something I think) kept knowing exactly what to do and then did it, without a single failure or setback along the way. All-powerful makes for rather boring. Kinda like Doc Savage when we're on the subject of books and movies :P

or that zombie one with Will Smith

And this is one of many reasons I dislike that film. I am Legend is one of my favourite books... about Vampires. Yet everyone that talks about the film talks about a zombie flick completely unaware of any connection to vampirism.

Well they did resemble vampires more than zombies, I just couldn't remember it clearly enough until you named it. All I remember is that Smith is to save the day and then they reach this village and the church bells tolls and it's all "yay, God will save us". As an atheist I find movies that end like that pretty much as annoying as overly romantic comedies.

Playing Minec - oh wait I said that in another post - well I was but now I'm sat here on my sofa in my tiny one bed flat listening to my washing machine spinning wondering if I'll have enough electric (on my token meter) to last until next Wednesday when I get my benefit. Looks out window at the sunshine wonders if I should get up off this sofa and go for a walk?
Nah i'll just prattle about all day doing nothing specific as going out might start off my hayfever again (it's been really bad lately :( )

Wish I still had a garden as that used to keep me active (and fit) for hours. Damn you council/government/bedroom tax for taking my garden I had for over 30 years.

Yeah I wish I had a garden too - I feel rather cooped up in my apartment. We do have a common lawn/yard but it's full of screaming little things most of the time... And my balcony is smack in the sunshine most of the day (and I don't do well with heat or sun... a little vampiric blood, maybe...)

Picking up on what Banj said earlier, I hate it when film makers take something that already has an established concept, look, or style and mess about with it.

Examples abound, but the worst for me were what was done with World War Z, I am Legend, and Transformers! Non of the aforementioned required a redesign, as though the original was deficient some how.

Everything's on the right!!!

Hey Charlotte, if your balcony gets that much sun is there room enough for large sun screening grasses or bamboo in containers or something to shade it and make it a more useable space?

Now how did I miss the lasts posts in this thread? *looks suspiciously at Banj*

Hobby, I have a small table and bench out there (and a broken bicycle) so theoretically there might be room. I live on the top floor though so I'd need some shade from above too :P

And right now I'll have to go, again, because there's thunder, again, and I bet it will all stop the moment I turn of my computer, again.

Going back to the Dune topic I really was only talking about the books. I agree the movie was spectacularly bad but the books deal a great deal more with the whole idea of myth making rather than a god in the sense of a Christian like super being.
They also deal with ecology, language, the danger of prescience or the belief on it and political agenda underpinned by religious extremism.
It's a shame the movie is most people's only experience of this great work but I completely emphasise with your opinions.

No smudge tool was harmed in the making of this image.
