I've mentioned several problems with them before.

It's three films when one would have been sufficient. They added a load of unnecessary stuff that has nothing to do with the story that is being told just to pad it out. It was visually quite poor compared to the LOTR films which are more than a decade older. It attempts to be two very different things tonally which doesn't work at all.

It was a missed opportunity to make a great adaptation of a great novel, which is a shame considering how well they (mostly) handled the LOTR.
