Tilt your head sideways Val, and then add a certain dose of imagination. No, the other sideways... ;)

Picked up these bad boys today, books 7 and 8 in the series. Now I'm a happy little boy.

Well it says Totally Random so thought I would share a photo my wife took on a recent visit to Studely gardens in York. Mainly because its a very cool photo but also because of something I noticed when I was doing some editing on it earlier today.
Taken using a Canon 60d this is the jpeg version of it (she normally shoots in Raw but has the camera set up to produce a jpeg version at the same time for keeping as 'holiday snaps).
Now this is straight out the camera with absolutely no editing and no filters were used when shooting it. However I noticed a strange lightning (lightening?) of the sky down the left hand side of the tower.
Anyone know how this may have occurred? Any photography officianados out there? Any help would be really appreciated.

Don't know much (if anything!) about photography but...
The light seems to be a soft halo that actually goes all around the lit section of the building and the top edge of the trees, namely the areas of bright contrast where the sunlight is hitting.
A quick google reveals that this usually happens with HDR photography or when you fiddle with local contrast to accomodate the bright sunlight AND the dark shadows.
But if it hasn't been processed then I can only guess that it's something in the camera's settings and built-in software that is compensating for the high value range and producing the effect before it saves. Is the RAW like that too?

But as I don't have a camera all that is just guesswork on my part. :)

Thanks Val, at least for trying :) Unfortunately I cant check the Raw right now as I dont have the software on this PC, I'll have to have a look next time my wife is logged on to her i-mac (no she won't give me the password because if she does she'll never get me off it!).
I did read something similar about HDR photography but the info I found was way too technical for me. I'm gonna have to take a look at the manual for the camera I think to figure it out but it's around 300 pages.
I'll let you know what I find out.

It's just a bubble gun firing heart shaped bubbles. The antlers can seriously maim someone.
