how about followingbanj's suggestion of only depicting the RIDER?

It's a simple idea, but it might just work :hmm:

I thought about jumping on that dragon's back in Skyrim to try and take my own screenshot reference but it didn't end well.

Previous scribbles have been a complete failure to understand the wings but today I did draw a decent wing, which is a plus, I just couldn't attach it to anything credible.

Plenty more days left. *stares at clock*

Well. Here's .... something? :S

I don't know what's going on with that shoulder/wing/thing! :dunno:
Nor what direction that other wing is pointing! :?

But it's something. :)

And thank you, Charlotte. I have been wondering what animal is closest to it. Not a chicken and not a horse with wings and a stretchy neck.
I can never get my head around the four legs+two wings idea, so "bat" does indeed seem right to me.

And I do want to have the rider standing. That was the first thing that came to mind with this brief and the reason I really needed one of those pesky dragons in there somewhere.

Birds might still be a good ref too, as they also have two legs and two wings ;) (technically, I believe that's a "wyvern" but I'm not sure if that's not a dragon too...?)

Anyway, I think you're on to something :) The head looks a tad large but then again, if you emphasize the foreshortening that should be no issue. I also think you might want to add a sternum or whatsitcalled (where chicken have then wing muscles attached - it would probably make sense of the shoulder you think looks off)

Yes, the enormous gap between the wing/shoulder and the missing whatsitcalled is exactly the reason why I'm tempted to add in some little T-Rex style arms. :)
But then again, I understand imaginary six-limb anatomy even less than ...erm... everything else.

Perhaps if I add a large foreground object then that would cover it up! :P
